Alegria Accessories and Starfish Project share a strong common foundation. Besides being jewelry brands—both were founded in Indiana, are sold at Crossroads Fair Trade Goods & Gifts, and are driven by a mission to empower women who need a fresh start or helping hand.

Unethical jewelry production has many harmful effects, including serious human rights abuses and environmental damage such as deforestation and water pollution from toxic chemicals like cyanide and mercury. In contrast, these two brands are not only bringing ethical jewelry to the fair trade market but also creating meaningful job opportunities for women in need.

Alegria Accessories was founded with the purpose of supporting young women aging out of an orphanage in Honduras called Faith Home. Many of these women struggled to find employment or safe, stable living situations after leaving the orphanage. In response, Alegria created opportunities through the production of unique, handmade jewelry crafted by these women in Honduras. Their collection includes necklaces, bracelets, rings, and their most distinctive pieces—charms. The name “Alegria,” meaning joy, reflects the brand’s mission, as each piece is designed to bring both opportunity to the artisans and joy to the consumer.

Starfish Project shares a similar mission, working to provide employment opportunities for women and girls in Asia who have experienced exploitation. Their approach is centered on three key steps. First, they offer the opportunity to experience freedom by reaching out to women and girls in the sex industry and inviting them to leave and begin a new path. Next, they focus on establishing independence by providing holistic care programs and life skills training to support long-term stability. Finally, they help develop careers by offering specialized vocational training in areas such as design, photography, and accounting, empowering women to build sustainable futures. One employee from the US team even stated “most girls don’t even want to leave!”.

Ultimately, the difference between unethical and ethical jewelry is not just how it is made, but who it impacts. Brands like Alegria Accessories and Starfish Project prove that fashion can be a force for good by empowering women, restoring dignity, and creating lasting change. Every purchase becomes a step toward a more just and sustainable industry.
